Mar 05 --- From Charlie Wear: Good
articles being posted nearly every day. Soularize happening on March 9.
Is it time to become contagious? When is this "thing" going to go
viral? Next-Wave contributors continue to be writing about the
heartbeat of the emerging church, thanks.
Article: The Tension Regarding Intention by Todd Hunter I hear tension about intention just about everywhere I go these days. There seems to be tension over whether or not to intend to evangelize, or to plan to lead, or to aim for spiritual formation in ourselves or others. >> more Article: Why YOU Should Plant a Church by Bob Hyatt In the early days of our church planting adventure I spent some time seeking out other church planters, hoping for some wisdom and encouragement. Man, did I get a wake up call. >> more Article: The Omegabet: Rolling The Dice On Emerging Christianity By Bill Dahl © 2005 Venice Beach, Calif., is recognized as the birthplace for bodybuilding in the U.S. In ten years, it may be renowned as the location where a new body of Christ was born. At present, there is a tremendous amount of wagering going on within the Christian community in the U.S. about what the next form of Christianity will look like. It’s a huge gamble. The stakes are enormous. It’s the Omegabet. >> more Article: Engaging our postmodern culture: An Interview with Stanley Grenz (1950-2005) by Rogier Bos Dr. Stanley Grenz died this morning. He was one of the premier theologians of our time. Many Christians first encountered Postmodernism in his book Primer on Postmodernism. In this interview, which was first published on Next-Wave in May, 1999, Dr. Grenz reflects on how his thinking had evolved since its publication, and on the nature and place of evangelicalism. >> more Article: Mission, culture and the emerging church by Dave CramptonSuppose you decided to work within a cross–cultural ministry. What would be the first thing you would do? Would you attempt to understand the culture and grasp the language and customs, perhaps, before you step within that culture? >> more Article: Church Member Networking and Other Get Rich Quick Schemes by Brooks Hanes ...If one could say that “extremely furious” describes my emotional response to people who use the Church this way, then one could also say that “slightly drunk” describes a guy lying dead on the floor after a weekend binging spree. Words cannot contain my fury for this misuse of Christ’s Body... >> more Article: The Incarnation, Eucharist, and Community by Mark Van Steenwyk The discovery among evangelicals that our spirituality ought to beshaped by the Incarnation has caused many to re-examine the role of sacraments within the community of faith. >> more Article: The Gospel According to Ikea by David Fairchild I have to confess that I’m a fan of Ikea by necessity. If you were to tell me 10 years ago that I would one day shop at a store that makes you load, build, and eventually throw away flat-packed, pressed-board, in three shades of beech, I would have never believed you. >> more Poetry: Zero Plus Everything by Staci Tray From the editor: Simple, yet profound... >> more Article: The Fallen Powers: Worlds in Collision, Pt. 1 by Len Hjalmarson Over the past few weeks I have been trying to weave together a series of threads. Those threads are Paul's concept of "the fallen powers" (stoichea) in Galatians and Colossians, our broken search for significance through possessions or personalities, and our consumer culture. >> more Column: Preaching to the Postmodern Choir by Eutychus Bailey Many of us now laugh at ourselves when we look back at the last 40 years of ministry. Near the turn of the century all the postmodern stuff was really hot. It was so foreign to the generations that came before us that we spent a lot of time talking to ourselves and to them about it. >> more Column: Mike Morell: Five conferences...It's been awhile. But I wanted to let y'all (if you'll permit me a Southern United States-ism) know about some really awe-inspiring opportunities and events (5 special conferences) coming up. >> more Review: Jesus in the Margins by Rick McKinley, A Review by Duane Smets I grew up in a Christian home. Until a few years ago I think the only place I thought God did his thing was at church. In the last few years I have been more and more challenged to sort of live as a Christian outside the Christian box. What I surprisingly found was that Jesus was there too, exactly where I didn't expect him to be. >> more from the archives... Article: Five Obstacles to the Gospel by Doug Murren[This article was first published in October 2001] We talk quite often about the "pre-conversion" or "pre-Christian" state of those we are seeking to reach today. But I am not so sure we are facing some of the obstacles to the gospel in this of phase of our post-modern culture. We used to say in evangelism that we would catch them and God would clean them up. There is still a huge degree of truth in that position. We meant by this that conversion would deal with addictions, habits of sin, and attitudes of disbelief. Now many of these post-conversion challenges need attention before faith can do its work. >> more
