Nov 04 --- From Charlie Wear: There is something for everyone in this month's issue of Next-Wave. Futurists will want to read the latest offering from Eutychus Bailey. Practical theologians will want to read Next-Wave's interview with Brian McLaren. Practitioners will enjoy Mike Bishop's "Frankly," strong thoughts. Brian Newman, an American pastor who has been ministering in Europe for the last 10 years has some great insights on the state of the church on both continents. And the offerings from Steve Bush, Chris Stewart and Fred Peatross are excellent as well. Those with an eye on the culture will want to check out Drew Goodmanson's review of "Modest Mouse" and the state of zeitgeist as seen in Men's Magazines!. Once again, the contributions of our authors make Next-Wave an excellent resource. Feel free to comment on the articles. Enjoy!

Caught between two continents by Brian Newman Someone in my congregation asked me recently, "Where do you feel like you belong, Brian?" I was like a deer in the headlights. Paralyzed by indecision, wishing I could crawl in a hole and disappear. >>more

Ministry Babies and Modernity Bathwater by Eutychus Bailey [This article was originally written 1 November 2044 by Eutychus Bailey] As I look back over the past 40 or 50 years of ministry since the beginning of the 21st century I’ve seen a lot of changes in The Church...Almost all of these changes have, in the end, served the Body of Christ and given glory to God...I think there are a few things, however, which we lost and are now looking for... >> more

 Frankly...by Mike Bishop
Sometimes I like to hear just the bare nekkid truth. No wishy-washy posing or cover-your-butt-so-everyone-will-like-me double talk. Needless to say, watching the presidential debates has not been my favorite pastime lately. >> more

The Systematic Exclusion of Jesus from Christianity by Steve Bush ...The focus of Jesus' ministry, empowerment, is systematically excluded from the center of U.S. Christian discourse and practice. I want to explore some of the reasons why I believe this is so... >> more

Distinction vs. Division by Chris Stewart
I used to become weary as I drove around town looking at all of the different church buildings with different names on their signs, and knowing how different they must all be in the things they do as a fellowship. It seemed like you could find a different church on every corner. Oh how this must frustrate You, God, I prayed. >> more

Article:
Impartational Mentors by Fred Peatross Through most of the modern era the church has relied upon an educational model with the classroom as the primary tool and training ground for Christ-like growth and transformation. Kingdom values and identity are exhorted, sometimes discussed, in an educational setting with the hope of maturing disciples to practice selfless love in a selfish society.  >> more

Review: The Hubris of Modest Mouse by Drew Goodmanson
I recall listening to Modest Mouse five years ago when I lived in Seattle. A few of my friends were unofficial groupies, scouring the Seattle Weekly and The Stranger to find where they were playing that evening. >> more

Article: Zeitgeist in the Details (Men's Magazine) by Drew Goodmanson While walking through a shopping center, I stumbled upon a rack of men's magazines. Stacked side-by-side Details, Maxim, Stuff, FHM, Razor, Esquire, Men's Health and GQ peered back at me, wondering if I would take one of them home. It was at this moment, as I looked over the covers, it struck me. I should select one of these magazines to see what it might reveal about the state of man in America during November 2004. >> more

Article: I used to think I was a Christian by Charlie Wear
[This article was first published in the Feb. 99 issue of Next-Wave] As a church pastor I had the unenviable task of coming up with a new, fresh, “message from God” every week that would be practical, educational and life-transforming. It was easy to get into a certain routine. Pick a portion of the scriptures, the Book of Acts, the Gospel of Matthew, or whatever. Read several translations of the passage, research several commentators, think of several illustrations, then synthesize all of that material into 30-40 minutes of oratory...
