O.k., let’s get the obvious out of the way from the get-go:  America loves reality television.  This is not some quickly passing fascination.  Oh no, we (geez, I hate that pronoun at times like this) love the stuff.  We love the gross-out gourmet buffets of Fear Factor.  We love the stupid cupid musings of The Bachelor/Bachelorette.  We love the incredibly unreal Real World, whose cast members are chosen based on personality traits that will make them likely to either get into it or get it on with other cast members.  We love the shrewd, physically punishing, ultimate reward pursuing ways of Survivor.   

If you look at the number of copycat shows populating broadcast and cable channels, it seems that what we love the most in our reality television these days are the makeover shows – whether they be makeovers of houses, yards, motor vehicles, faces, wardrobes, body parts, or any combination thereof.  We love watching the frumpy house wife with tied-back hair transform into a model of fashion sensibility in just an hour.  We love watching neighbors completely reorganize and decorate each others’ homes.  We love seeing the SUV turn into a garbage eating monster.  We love boob jobs.

These makeover shows are a study unto themselves, and reveal some deep things about the psyche of our culture.  I am but a hack sociologist, and my psychological training is only slightly better, but it’s pretty obvious that we’re so into the makeover show because of the hope it holds out for those of us who sit and watch.  I may not have the money of the rich and famous, but for just a thousand dollars, I too can completely redo my master bedroom into a hip, romantic, Zen center over the weekend.  I may not be able to afford Armani, but I can assemble an awfully dapper wardrobe on a thrift store budget.  Mercifully, I’ll stop before considering the amount of plastic surgery it would take to get me looking cover-boy cool.

The hope extends beyond imagining that it was my face, my closet, my house, or my car getting the makeover.  What I as the viewer really want is for my life to change.  I make the mistake of believing that the couple that had their pig-sty of a house reorganized by a team of experts has continued to live a pristine and orderly existence.  I foolishly buy into the thought that just because some gay guys got their hands on some schmuck that in six weeks his hair won’t look like crap again.  No, no, no – those people really did change, and their lives will never be the same, and neither would mine if I had been in their position!!!

The maybe sad, but maybe genuinely hopeful reality is that the kind of change we’re looking for takes longer than an hour or a weekend to produce.  Since we’re looking for deep down transformation, we are forced to take a longer view.  And the kind of abundance we’re after will cost us some disciplined effort for a significant period of time.  Oh yeah, one more thing: we still need Jesus.  Our change still has to be centered on something transcendent. 

As Dallas Willard highlights in “The Spirit of the Disciplines,” real life change comes as a result of long-term practice and repetition.  We are successful in following Jesus to the degree that we actually follow his model of behavior, and not just prematurely attempt to practice what he said, whether it be cheek-turning or mercy-giving.  Trying to figure out what Jesus would actually do comes as a result of doing what Jesus actually did/does, and not as a result of projecting ourselves into a fictional imagining of how Jesus would handle it when our kid tells us he’s been cheating at school, using drugs, buying internet porn with our credit cards, or whatever.  We must imitate what we see in Jesus . . . all the time.  When we do that, we begin to have a sense of the right things to do.

When we satisfy ourselves on that kind of change, we have found the good thing.  We have found the source of water that doesn’t run dry.  So what if it’s not automatic, quick, and easy?  So what if it’ll never be sexy enough to be on reality television?  Perhaps by the time we get there (wherever there might be), we won’t even care about reality TV any more.  Hmmm, maybe not – we do love that stuff.

Hi my name is Debbie. I live in Las Vegas, Nv. I am writing to you to let you know that I just love your shows, whether it is home makeovers or people makeovers. I think that is the greatest thing.
Thank God for the people and companies that will go all out for the public. I would love for someone to come out to redo my home, but that is not the reason I am writing.
The reason I am writing is because of the people in the state of Florida that have went through Hurricane Charley in August, then Hurricane Frances in September now here they go again with Hurricane Ivan. There are so many people that have lost their homes and everything that they have worked so hard and so long for. To be honest my Mother lives in Florida, Thank God that nothing happened to her or her home, but there are millions of folks that have been without power, as of today it is 10 days. Which means they have no food, no ice, no electricity. no nothing. God knows how hot it is there with 90 plus degree whether, plus 100¡umidity. I dont mean to be rude but, I have seen so many makeovers to peoples homes that yes granted some are unforunate, but most of them have nicer and bigger homes that what I have, or what most people have. My point is, is that if you could help the families that are really down and out, the ones that have lost their homes completely, that would be the greatest GIFT ever. So please take this as a sign that alot of the Floridians need help.
Also one other thing, My Mother told me this morning that the Red Cross came down the steet today to tell everyone that they had a thing at KMART to go to, to get hot dogs and chips, it broke my moms heart, only for the fact that my Mother was the one that always gave not took from others. It was the saddest thing I had ever heard. That is just not right. So PLEASE take this letter into consideration and help these families. My Mother is fine, she is dealing with Mother Nature, but there are lots of people Mothers, Fathers, Children, Grandparents, everyone that cannot survive. Thank God that they are all alive, but the children are our future. PLEASE HELP.

Steve, I appreciate your efforts, but I am afraid this was a poorly written article. Your style, while perhaps fun and quirky, fails to effectively present much of a coherent point.

Every generation of Christians, from the Early Church until today, faces challenges on how they are to live "in the world but not of it." What that looks like, how that plays out, and what that means will be different for each generation of Christians that come along in this fallen and broken world. Today we have to figure out how to interact with such massive and weighty issues as Television in general, particular types of programming and content therein more specifically (i.e. Reality TV, etc), and the general movement of the visual image taking over the written word as the dominant medium for communication. In addition, sexual mores, gender roles, alcohol and other addictive substances, and popular misology are all issues that are more prevalent and "in-our-face" today than they have been for previous generations of Christians to deal with. All of these things and more are the playing field for how we the Church, together, figure out how to most effectively live the life of a disciple in this world and not of it, while live the great commission of being in this world to tell it the good news.

Unfortunately, your article did not even mention this singularly important issue for Christians with Reality TV: what should our interaction be with these medium inputs into out lives? Should we stand against the grain and strive to live counter-cultural lives? Certainly on some things we should and on others perhaps we should be more flexible. I'm not about to wrestle those out here, but I was disappointing to not even see a hint of Christian cultural awareness (and self-awareness) on your part in this article.

I highly recommend that you (and anyone reading this post interested Christianity & culture) read Ken Meyer's excellent book entitled, "All God's Children & Blue Suede Shoes". It is perhaps the best work on this topic available today. In addition, I would go and find a few of Neil Postman's books, particularly "Amusing Ourselves to Death" amongst others. (Also, Mars Hill Audio Journal would be an outstanding resource for you to peruse). Steve, again, I appreciate your heart, your vigor, and your desire to figure these things out -- and more importantly, to live lives in Christ -- the kind of lives he died to bring us. Amen. But I suggest you learn more on this vital issue of cultural interaction and attempt to move to not merely thinking and interacting with culture -- but thinking critically about it.

It perhaps is the greatest redundancy out there (or should be), but, frankly, we need more "Thinking Christians". I am afraid the level of deep introspection and discussion on this, and all topics of theological interest, is today incredibly lacking. I am sad to say that your article was yet one more piece of evidence for that conclusion.

Ed, you have a point (however long it was) that sin unfortunately has a "regular" place in our lives as americans. However, the article, from what I understand, is not giving permission to embrace the corruption of this age, but rather to use the ways people have learned to communicate in this corrupt age to bring the message of Christ. The Word of God is not one of Tolerance, but of Grace - which means there is an element of Truth - but in order to get that Grace and Truth to the ears of this world, we have to be willing to engage them where they are - in their reality.

Do you realy think "reality tv" is real? These shows are nothing more than a distraction from what reality realy is. The things of GOD. Ever since the fall of man, man for the most part has searching for his own self-worth instead of his worth in his Creator. That worth being a intimate, personal relationship with GOD ALMIGHTY.

I find it exceedingly sorrowful that this article was written in the manner that it was.
Where is the reason why the western world find these shows so fascinating. (Note- FASCINATE- To bewitch; to enchant; to operate on by some powerful or irresistible influence; to influence the passions or affections in an incontrollable manner.)

The church has fallen asleep many years ago and has allowed the enemy to make a strong stand in our midst. This country (america) has every god known to man from the begining of time in it and the body of CHRIST has not as a whole stood up to fight the wiles of Satan.

This nation is in grave danger of judgement from God because we have allowed the "LAW OF GOD" TO BE CHANGED. We, as a nation, are calling good evil and evil good.

Where is the repentance? Better yet, where is the message of repentance? The church has allowed a half truth in her. The whole counsel of GOD is not given. We here GOD is love and HE is but HIS love does include concequence for disobedience. We HIS word written on our hearts yet we dabble in the things of HELL!

Where is the GOSPEL MESSAGE? The death, burial and resurrection.

I don't see you judging in your article but these verses need to be said; "Therefore thou art inexcusable, O man, whosoever thou art that judgest: for wherein thou judgest another, thou condemnest thyself; for thou that judgest doest the same things. But we are sure that the judgment of GOD is according to truth against them which commt such things. And thinkest thou this, O man, that judgest them which do such things, and doest the same, that thou shalt escape the judgment of GOD? Or despisest thou the riches of HIS goodness and forbearance and longsuffering; not knowing that the goodness of GOD leadeth thee to repentance?" Rom. 2:1-4

I don't apologize for the length of this response or what has been said because much, much more can be said. The good news is IT HAS BEEN ALREADY SAID in GOD'S WORD.

This is for all of us to examine (myself included, which is why it is so long.)

We need to put on the armor of GOD and examine ourselves and get dirty so that GOD will clean others up when they see what a real "reality show" is.

For the glory of GOD in HIS SON JESUS CHRIST let us repent and "abstain from all apperance of evil." AND FIGHT THE SPIRITUAL WAR WE ARE CALLED TO FIGHT.

I think your response to my earlier question about the chicken or the egg is right on. You are absolutely right about the power of the Spirit being the change agent in a life. I think the reality TV fad, although intriguing, is dangerous for our culture as a whole because it teaches that we have the ultimate control over change in our lives. Yes, we can change our clothes, hair style, etc...but the change that makes a difference in who we are and where our life is going only comes from the God who created us and loves us enough to die for us.

Great article - it hits home. I'd like to ask about the change catylist. What is it that brings about that change in our lives? If we want to be changed somehow from our present selves, what is it that changes us? Is it following the example of Jesus, or is it allowing Jesus to effect us through a personal relationship with Him? It's a question of the Chicken or the Egg. Does the spiritual transform the physical, or does the physical transform the spritual?
