origins project

I'm heading up to LA tomorrow night for a 2.5 day conference called The Origins Project - held at The Mayan, a historic LA nightclub. It is put on by Erwin McManus and Mosaic Church. I've been told that it is awesome, and I'm looking forward to a week of learning.

I'll debrief a bit for you each day...or blog on the spot if they have wi-fi.

origins - day 1

The Origins conference is located at the Mayan Theatre in a pretty seedy area, so we had a tough time finding a place to eat. We finally settled on a scary looking Korean BBQ place - wow, it was good. Pile your plate with raw meat, and bring it back to your table to cook.

We got a sweet parking space right in front of the theatre where no one else was parking, and we checked in.

As you enter the Mayan, it feels like you're entering a special attraction at Disneyland. Everything has the look and feel of ancient Mayan ruins. Huge 'carved' rock walls towering on both sides of you - tight claustrophobic spaces that function as hallways. Filthy carpet, funky bathrooms, and dark passageways.

We walked in at 7pm, and it was obvious that some people had been there a long time - we sat in the balcony - the upper balcony. Despite our distance from the stage, we could see the 3 square and 2 circle screeens rather well.

Session 1: Transcendant Calling - Alex McManus
Alex asked us "how did you get here?" His main point was a reminder that no one (including ourselves) brought us to this point - God did. God has called us to do what we're doing.

Specifically, Jesus said, "Come follow me." Jesus said that he was making us fishers of men. Alex pointed out that when he called his disciples (and us), he didn't say, "Come follow me so you can get to heaven" or "come follow me and believer the right things." Jesus called us to live a life that is bigger than ourselves.

He talked about his moment in history being a "butt-naked" moment - strip Christianity down to only what is essential. Nothing else is needed except for the very essence.

Session 2: Primal Essence - Erwin McManus
Then, Erwin McManus (pastor of Mosaic) got up to speak. He was amazing as usual.

Erwin talked about the need to deconstruct the church as an organization and create a movement. Less organization - more chaos. He talked about how most church leaders are trained to be eagles (soaring above everything - having a big vision) or hawks (focused in on the target and getting it done). He said that he is more like a bat (blind and flying at night). More like a bat out of hell and never wanting to go back.

He focused on - "leadership is about the essence of something, not about the systems." And, the three things that are "essential" are:

1. Live By Faith
   "Do you live a life that proves that God can be trusted?" In other words, are you taking risks that involve a deep faith that only God can pull off whatever you're doing in ministry.
2. Known By Love
   "Are people your highest value?"
3. Voice Of Hope
   "How much hope are you offering the people around you?" The local church is God's voice of hope in the world.

A few more questions that stood out:

• Are you desperate to make a difference in this world? Have you moved beyond "we should make a difference" to "we MUST make a difference"?
• The more God does for us - the more difficult it is to follow Him. We get fat and lazy.
• Will your church create the future rather than just trying to keep up with what our culture is doing?

origins - day 2

Session 3: Mission Is Why The Church Exists - Alex McManus
Alex was on fire this morning - very helpful in a few areas. He talked about the fact that we're not trying to convert people to Christianity, we're inviting them to join us in following Jesus. Small difference that has huge ramifications.

In reality, God created "humans" to be in relationship with Him. God didn't create us to be "Christians." So, when someone chooses to follow Jesus, they are returning to the true essence of what it means to be a human being - to be in relationship with our Creator.

Essentially, the church is all about "mission" - living life for something bigger than ourselves. When we live life to serve and reach others - that's when we find out true identity. Being "truly human" isn't about serving ourselves.

Session 4: The Mosaic Story - Erwin McManus
Erwin shared alot about his early mistakes in leading what was known as the "Church on Brady" at the time - now called Mosaic.

"If you're trying to be relevant, you are already behind. We are agents of change creating the future that God is imagining."

Rather than being relevant, we must focus on the "primary" aspects of life and ministry. A creative person can work wonders with primary colors. We can work wonders with the primary things - the essence of what it means to follow Jesus.

I brought my laptop with me today, and I found out they have wi-fi. So, I thought I'd just post my notes after each session. BTW, I'm seriously envious of the sound and lighting system Mosaic gets to use at the Mayan. Un-stinkin'-believable!

Session 5: Relevance to Culture is Not Optional - Alex McManus

When Jesus says "come follow me" - he is on the move. If you stay where you are, the distance between you and Jesus will grow.. He is moving, moving, moving. A disciple is not seated - a disciple is moving (on the move).

The most relevant person in the world is Jesus.

"Welcome to the future!" We are walking into the future God is creating. When we stay relevant to culture, we are being relevant to the past. When we stay relevant to Jesus, we are being relevant to the future.

Postmodern church - simply by complaining about what once was will somehow create something new.

The way you know what a "true human" looks like is by looking at Jesus.

Jesus sees a future, and he's inviting us to reclaim the planet based on the vision He has in mind. When you talk to Jesus, you are talking to someone from the future. Either you are crazy, or the world needs you. We need to be relevant to the world so that they can receive what we have.

"We have to change the world - into the world that Jesus is showing us!"

The Bible exists because he is on mission. He isn't on mission because it says it in the Bible.

Consumer: Follow Jesus - go to heaven.
Producer: Follow Jesus - fisher of men.

Mark 1 - the disciple-making process of Jesus

• Jesus ignores interested parties.
  Goes and preaches somewhere else.
  Gives us permission to say "no" to felt needs (crowd).
  
• Jesus sends potential followers away after he heals a leper and a paralytic.
  
• Jesus tells a demoniac to go home to his own people after Jesus heals him. (Mark 5) God shepherds His people. He meets their needs. He calls human beings to live their lives for something greater than themselves.

Session 6: The Barbarian Way - Erwin McManus

Christianity has become adequate rather than an extraordinary experience with God. Why is it that we are so drawn to peace and safety when our hearts thrive on adventure?

The local church is a collection of broken and fragmented people brought together by the masterful, artistic hand of God to display something beautiful as His light shines through us.

Erwin talked about the theme of Mosaic over the past year..."Crash: Prepare For Impact. ("Unbreakable" with Bruce Willis. Train crash where everyone dies but him. In that moment, he discovers that he has super-human strength.)

Should we strip ourselves of this domesticated religion? Should we return to the barbaric life of following Jesus?

Read Acts 27.

• Everything is going well - you think you can make it.
• A huge storm comes up.
• Get rid of anything that weighs you down. Get rid of anything that prevents you from creating the future.
• They started throwing stuff off the boat that they originally thought they needed.
• We're going to crash, but you'll accomplish your mission.
• What is ahead is not smooth sailing. There is a crash impending. If you are going to advance the Kingdom of God, there is conflict, battle, and pain waiting. Retreat is not an option. Cut the anchors - blaze ahead.

Are you a mushroom eater? Someone has to be the very first person to eat a new type of food. Some people don't want to be the first one to eat the mushroom. It might kill you. But, when you get hungry enough, you'll be willing to eat anything. Are you hungry?

God's heart expressed in the local church - something so beautiful that we're willing to risk death in order to see God's future realized.

origins - day 3 (last session)

Session 7: You Are a Mystic Warrior - Erwin McManus

Read Acts 17.

• We don't need better services or strategies. We need prophets pointing people toward the unknown God.
  
• The things we known most deeply are not connected to data - most is known through emotion and experience. You know them in your gut - in your soul - not in your reasoning faculties. You can't come to God through reason (or experience). All the data we share to help people believe is what we pull together after we believe. It makes us feel better that our experience is not so crazy.
  
• You are a "mystic warrior" - you know something others don't know. You transcend time and space. You are a citizen of an invisible Kingdom. A mystic warrior carries the burden of people following other gods.

You need to be in love with your city - or leave. Know every inch of your city. Fall in love with it. God has called you to own it. "You see that city? That's my city!" Does you heart break because their are idols in the land. Part of being a mystic warrior is translating to your culture. Part of being a mystic warrior is seeing God in everything. Can you exegete your culture to show people that God is romancing them through everything in this world.

We've been given a divine mandate to live for others. We edit that message to hear "you are everything."

Christians should stop seeking their own pleasure and start being inconvenienced for the sake of others.

Paul doesn't apologize for knowing what can't truly be known. He is a mystic warrior, and he is proclaiming to know the God of the universe.

People aren't looking for how much you know about God. People are looking for people who know God - so that they can follow you into His presence.

Do you want to be a church leader or a spiritual leader?
Do you want to teach the Bible or do you want to be a prophet?

kneeling on the floor - 14.5 years later

We're worshipping right now at Origins, and I just want to capture the rawness of the moment.

Alex called all the church planters down front to receive prayer and be anointed with oil. As all gathered, he asked us to one by one (lots of people) yell out our name and what city we are planting in. It was a powerful moment to be standing next to so many men and women who are passionate about starting a new church in their city.

Then, he had us all kneel on the floor - right in front of the stage - with all the chairs cleared out. As we kneeled, people came and prayed for us and anointed us with oil.

A man near me placed his hand on my back, and I began to hear God speak to me - just like he did 14.5 years ago when I knelt with several thousand teenagers on the floor of an arena in Dallas, Texas at a Foursquare youth convention. It was midnight - January 1, 1991. God spoke to me so clearly that night. "David, I have called you to follow after me with your entire life. You won't be a photographer - you will be in ministry."

It was like a serious deja-vu just a few minutes ago. Kneeling - with many people - in front of the stage - God speaking.

"David, over the next year, you will need to take many risks. You will be tempted to fear. Don't - have faith. Things will come up over the next 12 months that will be more overwhelming than ever. I am with you and you will prosper. Do not fear the outcome. Risk it."

You have been conned by New Age. I ask you what was Christ instructions to His disciples, including us - Go and tell them the Good News.

Yes, we are broken, we are sinners (did you hear that at the origins project, that we are all sinners and cannot enter into the Kingdom of Heaven except through Jesus).

Remember, Christ died for our sins, which started when Adam chose a relationship with Eve instead of with God. He did have a choice and chose wrong, thus he were doomed to enternal damnation except Christ came and died for our transgressions, our sins. He took on the wrath of God, God's angry toward Man because of our sin. Christ did not come to establish His Kingdom on Earth nor did he come to save the Church (which did not exist at that time).

To All who have fllen for the McManus brothers false teaching, I pray that the Holy Spirit will convict each of you to search the Scritpures and challenge what you hear and read about the McManus brothers.
